PCHP Recieves 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator: Largest nonprofit evaluator says organization “outperforms most other charities in America”

Garden City, NY, July 3, 2013 – The Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) received Charity Navigator’s coveted 4-star rating for the third year in a row. The 4-star rating, Charity Navigator’s highest, is given to nonprofits that practice exceptional fiscal responsibility and governance in fulfilling their mission.
“Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way,” said Charity Navigator’s President and CEO Ken Berger.
Charity Navigator works to help charitable givers make intelligent giving decisions by providing information on more than six thousand charities nationwide and by evaluating their financial health. It calculates each charity’s score based upon several broad criteria, including how much is spent per dollar raised, what percentage of funds goes to programs vs. administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the organization’s long-term financial health.
“Only 10% of the charities we rate have received at least 3 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that PCHP outperforms most other charities in America,” said Berger. “This “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator differentiates PCHP from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
“We are so proud to have received a 4-star rating for the third year in a row,” said PCHP’s CEO, Sarah Walzer. “PCHP is so appreciative of our funders’ generosity and we are committed to using our financial resources wisely. Through the trust and support of our donors, we can continue to expand our network of sites across the country and ensure that all families served receive the highest quality school readiness programming.”
Since 1965, The Parent-Child Home Program has been committed to providing parents with the necessary tools to prepare their children to achieve their greatest potential. Over four decades of research shows that PCHP increases parent-child interaction, improves children’s performance on IQ and school readiness assessments, and increases high school graduation rates by 30% – to the same level as their middle class peers.
About The Parent-Child Home Program: PCHP is a national early childhood literacy, parenting, and school readiness program. The evidence-based Program effectively bridges the achievement gap for low-income children through its intensive home visiting (twice a week over a two year period) with two-four-year-olds and their parents. Trained community-based Early Learning Specialists model reading, play, and conversation activities using books and educational toys brought as gifts to the families. Targeting families challenged by poverty, isolation, language and literacy barriers, and limited educational opportunities, the Program prepares children and families for school success and high school graduation. Local Program staff also link families to other needed social services and support their transition to high quality preschool programs. The National Center oversees local partner sites in over 150 communities in the U.S. and internationally in Bermuda, Canada, and Ireland.
