Press Release, 6/7/18   Philadelphia Parent-Child Home Program Celebrates First Graduating Class In South/Southwest Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA June 2018 – The Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP), a leading school readiness organization focused on eliminating the achievement gap by ensuring that all parents have access to the knowledge, skills, and materials they need to build their children’s school readiness, is thrilled to announce the first graduating class of the South/Southwest Philadelphia PCHP.

The graduation will take place on Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM. The celebration will be held at Circle of Hope, located at 1125 Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147. Forty-one children will be graduating, marking their completion of a successful two years of receiving PCHP in their homes.

The South/Southwest Philadelphia cohort is Philadelphia’s first PCHP graduating class and is proud to have worked with 50 Latino and African immigrant families since 2016. PCHP was GreenLight Fund Philadelphia’s 2016 portfolio organization. Through GreenLight’s investment, PCHP was able to launch a four-year expansion plan of working with 400 families a year by 2020. GreenLight’s support also allowed PCHP to attract additional funding from Vanguard’s Strong Start for Kids, The William Penn Foundation, The Philadelphia Foundation, and the S Albert Fund.

At the event, the PCHP children who have recently completed the first year of the Program in South/Southwest Philadelphia will also be celebrated. This cohort consists of 45 Latino and African immigrant families.

The PCHP National Center is proud of the wonderful work that is being done in South/Southwest Philadelphia, and congratulates all of the graduates.

About Parent-Child Home Program

The Parent-Child Home Program’s (PCHP) international network of program sites provides under-resourced families with the necessary tools to ensure their children achieve their greatest potential in school and in life. Since 1965, PCHP has been assisting underserved communities in replicating and expanding this proven school readiness program that builds early parent-child verbal interaction and learning at home. Through twice-weekly visits by highly trained community-based early learning specialists, PCHP provides families the skills, materials (books and educational toys), and support to help parents engage and teach their children. Over 50 years of research shows that the Program effectively increases school readiness, decreases the need for special education services before grade three by 50%, and increases participants’ high school graduation rates by over 30% to the same level as their middle-income peers.
